I own the ART PRO VLA compresor, I hope we are talking about that and not one of the pre amps, even though I would have no problems recomending anything by this company. Unfortunately, my vocals sound horrible through anything (transformers, tubes, etc.) even if I tried taking advantage of the synergistic effect of Pro-Tools … and after reading bapu’s thread, I don’t dare move up to X1. I couldn’t hear any difference between that and the Presonus Dual Blue Tube preamp I have. I tested it with several mics – condenser and dynamic with both a male and a female singers. I even had a NOS RCA 12AX7 to put in it but never got to that point.
Great Unit, Professional Quality
I”m not fond of the transformer sound on my vocals and that’s what I’m looking for. Seen first hand meter or post due to the compressor or master. The preamp has two lamps, one 12AX7 and one 12AT7 of Chinese origin. Ordering these items today will reserve your spot in line, and you won’t be charged until the items ship to you.
Bose S1 Pro Multi
A few minutes and you’re done and the unit is silent, other than some tube hiss you’d expect with the gain cranked. This is common to all Pro Channel II’s I’ve used (including my own… which I sent back to ART a couple of years ago to get fixed… but it came back with the same hum at high volumes). I also believe the Pro MPA II has the same hum problem in one channel at high gain. The Pro VLA II probably has the same “flaw” but it isn’t as obvious because the gain levels aren’t as high. Thanks all for helping me decide whether to return the Pro Channel II I just bought, which is doing exactly what the OP described in 2012. So not only does this problem appear to be baked in, it also appears that Art has no intention of fixing it.
I can’t even really say that this is a fair review because I didn’t fully explore all of the Pro Channel’s features with the stock tubes. I had a JJ83CS 12AX7 tube waiting here for it when it came in the mail, and only briefly listened to the stock tubes before changing them out. For an extra $20, it makes a HUGE difference in overall tone quality. The stock tubes were dull and flat and kind of noisy- changing them out boosted the sound rating from a 6.5/7 to an 8.5/9. The VU meters are incredible, with the switch button you can see the compressor values or the pre values.
People slam ART but as usual it depends how you use it and often what you use it with. I’ve done a lot of recording using ART with $3K mics and I used to use Neve preamps for these mics. However, I found I could get the same in your face up front sound from the mics and the ART stuff as I could from the Neve.
